The Chiwara (also known as Ci Wara, Tyi Wara, ciwara or even tchiwara) mask represents an antelope. It is ceremonial object used by the Bambara people and reserved for individuals recognized as the most skilled and efficient workers during the harvest season, being transferred from one person to another based on their expertise. Wearing the mask and participating in the ceremonial Chiwara dance is considered a prestigious honor. Gifting a Chiwara is the best gift one can give in the Bambara tradition of Mali, West Africa.
