About Us

Our brand was inspired by our ancestors’ land, Timbuktu. The story of the city started in the 11th century when Tuareg merchants ️still used the Sahara Desert as commercial route. Temperatures in this area can reach up to 47°C (117 °F) and water sources are extremely rare. Since camels can stay up to 7 months without drinking, they were the preferred transportation method. Whenever Merchants would reach the edge of the desert, they would gather around the closest well that was owned by an old woman called Buktu. As more people heard about the well, Buktu started warehousing a depot for commercial goods which attracted more people and eventually lead to the creation of a city. Timbuktu in the local language "Tin-Buktu" means the City of Buktu. Fast-forward to the 12th century, Timbuktu became the capital of the empire of Mali and was inhabited by Muslims, Christians and Jews for hundreds of years always reinforcing racial, cultural and religious tolerance. The ancient University of Timbuktu also became a heaven for scholars, attracting over 25,000 students. However, it is not until King Mansa Musa's pilgrimage to Mecca that the rest of the world will find out about Timbuktu. From there on, multiple European explorers will set the mission of finding the mysterious place only to die in the desert or caught up by the local armies. That is why Timbuktu is sometimes referred in some cultures as the “farthest place on earth”. In present day, Timbuktu is located in Mali, West Africa and is classified as one of the 7 wonders of the World. Like our ancestors, we believe in cultural diversity and pride. Because of that, our goal is to give everyone the opportunity to connect to their cultural roots through various forms of art.
