The Bajan trident was taken from Barbados' colonial badge where the trident of Poseidon is shown with Britannia holding it. Interestingly, the trident has multiple meanings. The most common explanation is that the broken shaft symbolizes freedom and Barbados' break/independence from Britain. The three points of the trident also represent the three principles of democracy government of, for and by the people. Finally, it symbolizes the sea god Neptune and reflects the sea's large significance for Barbados.
